Poor address system will frustrate TV licence levy collection – Databank C EO

Chief Executive Officer of Databank Group, Kojo Addae-Mensah has said the lack of a reliable house numbering system in Ghana will frustrate the collection of the TV licence levy, which has been reintroduced.

“That’s one of the problems we have on this TV licence issue,” he told morning starrhost Kafui Dey on Thursday.

Cabinet has approved the modalities for the collection of the TV licence levy and the Government has begun putting in place measures to implement the reintroduction policy.

"Let me give the assurance that cabinet has already approved, six months ago, the new modalities that we are to adopt in the distribution of whatever is accrued from the TV licensing", Minister of Communication, Dr. Omane Boamah said on the floor of Parliament.

Boamah made the announcement to Parliament in response to a call by the Member of Parliament (MP) for Kwesimintsim, Joe Baidoo-Ansah for the re-introduction of the TV license scheme during discussions on the Communication Ministry's GH¢ 298 million budget for 2015 in parliament.

The state broadcaster reintroduced the levy in April, which would mean that TV owners would have to pay a levy of Gh¢2.

Apart from GBC, the reintroduced TV licence levy will also benefit institutions like the National Media Commission (NMC) and the Ghana Independent Broadcasters Association (GIBA).

However, Addae-Mensah said the problems with the country’s address and house numbering systems should be tackled first before the TV licence policy is implemented.
