AIDS Ambassador deflates Dzidzor Mensah’s volte-face

One of the “Heart to Heart” HIV/AIDS Ambassadors, Rev John Azumah has said he doubts the claims of fellow Ambassador Joyce Dzidzor Mensah that she never tested positive for the disease.

Mr Azumah, Dzidzor Mensah and Gifty Torkonoo have been the three main Ambassadors for the Ghana AIDS Commission in the fight against discrimination against persons living with HIV/AIDS.

According to the Commission, being HIV positive is the main requirement for being an Ambassador.

Though the Commission insists Dzidzor Mensah tested positive in 2007, she also insists she falsified her status for a greater good – helping society fight discrimination against sufferers of HIV/AIDS.

Rev Azumah, however, told Kafui Dey on Morning Starr Tuesday that he strongly disbelieves Dzidzor Mensah’s volte-face.

He wonders how Dzidzor Mensah would have been taking antiretroviral drugs if she never had HIV in the first place. According to him, he ever had discussions with Dzidzor Mensah about her viral load.

The Ghana AIDS Commission issued a statement Monday saying: “There is evidence to support her initial claim of being HIV positive since 2007, and she has been benefitting from antiretroviral therapy from health facilities in Accra.”

The Commission said the evidence of the Ambassadors’ HIV status “was documented at the various health centres they accessed treatment.”

“Additionally, they were all registered members of NAP Ghana, the Network of Persons Living with HIV. These individuals were extensively engaged by legal, psycho-social and communication consultants prior to their going public. Joyce has been a member of NAP since 2007,” the statement noted.

The Commission said: “The “Heart to Heart” Campaign is still an active campaign with four current Ambassadors who are Rev John Azumah, Mrs. Gifty Torkonoo (Degbeh), Mrs Lydia Azumah and Ms. Charity Owusu-Danso. Joyce Dzidzor Mensah has not been part of this campaign since December 2012. She has made several claims on various platforms but has been unable to substantiate any of these to date.”
