The National Security Council Secretariat (NSCS) has with immediate effect, declared the Kotoka International Airport (KIA) land area as a security zone.
The NSCS in a statement issued Tuesday, December 16, 2014 and signed by Colonel E.W.K Nibo said, the decision is to prevent further encroachment of the boundaries of the KIA.
It noted that: “A land Commission public notice in 1998 aimed at halting all further developments on the KIA acquisition in order to promote the airport’s land use objectives and safety and security of aviation operations have been disregarded by private developers resulting in serious hazards in airport operations”
.
As a result, the boundaries of the airport have also been “redefined so that non-conforming development and other unauthorized activities are curtailed”.
The land around the airport is said to be “under pressure” by private developers.
“The trend has caused massive encroachment on the environment, posing a grave threat to flight operations and creating hazards such as bird strikes and stray animals on the runway,” the statement noted.
Meanwhile, interested parties who wish to know whether their developments fall within the declared zone, have been directed to “the Lands Commission for clarification before any new or further development is undertaken”.
