Bill Cosby said he expects “black media” to have a “neutral mind” when reporting on the many sexual-abuse allegations against him in a new interview published Sunday.
“Let me say this. I only expect the black media to uphold the standards of excellence in journalism, and when you do that, you have to go in with a neutral mind,” he told The New York Post‘s “Page Six” section.
The comedian said his lawyers have advised him not to speak to media about the allegations made by more than 20 women.
“They don’t want me talking to the media,” Cosby said, before he abruptly ended the phone interview. Throughout the interview, however, “Page Six” reported that the comedian sounded “upbeat.”
Cosby has remained largely silent while the number of allegations against him continue to mount. Taken together, these women’s stories paint the comedian as a serial rapist, whose assaults allegedly spanned four decades dating back to the 1960s. Many of the women also claim that Cosby offered them drug pills prior to the alleged assaults.
Last month, the comedian briefly broke his silence on the allegations in an interview with Florida Today.
“I know people are tired of me not saying anything, but a guy doesn’t have to answer to innuendos,” he said. “People should fact check. People shouldn’t have to go through that, and shouldn’t answer to innuendos.”
Cosby also got into a tense post-interview discussion with a journalist from The Associated Press, after the reporter asked about the allegations.
