The Interior Ministry is demanding that communities currently under curfew must show commitment to peace before the curfew will be lifted. The Ministry over the weekend renewed the curfew in Bimbilla and Nankpanduri in the Northern Region and the Alavanyo and Nkonya townships in the Volta Region.
The curfew period in Bimbilla is from 6pm to 6am; while in Nankpanduri residents will experience a curfew period of 10pm to 4am.
The Alavanyo and Nkonya townships in the Volta Region will endure curfew hours is between 4pm to 6am.
The Deputy Minister of Interior, James Agalga explained that the renewed curfew periods were done in consultation with the respective District and Regional Security Councils.
He told Citi News that, imposing curfews on communities which experience frequent violence “is one of the measures which can bring about relative calm, civility and peace.”
Meanwhile, the Chief of Alavanyo, Togbui Gyekye Atakora VII says there is a lot of public education ongoing in the Alavanyo Township for peace to prevail.
They have been observing it because they don’t have a choice. It’s not pleasant though but we just have to do what the law says.”
The two towns have been locked in a dispute over land for years and tensions were heightened recently when a shooting incident left one person dead and another in a very critical condition.
